AfterLinear Access Control Installation: The West Hollywood Owner’s Guide
If you have a Linear access control system and a keypad, card reader, or receiver that quit on you, we stock Linear-compatible parts and can usually have one installed the same day. Most Linear access control installations in West Hollywood run between $285 and $490 for the part and labor together, depending on which component failed and whether the wiring needs attention. You’ll know it’s the access control part itself when the gate motor still hums or the arm still moves, but the keypad, remote, or phone entry stops triggering it. Which Linear Models This Applies To
The Linear access control line is broad, and the gotcha is that not every part works across every series. We service and stock access control parts for the older AE series, the APEC series, the LPD keypads, the MGR/AM-KP readers, and the more recent RE and ProAccess gear. If you have a Linear telephone entry system, the wiring and the relay board are often salvageable while only the keypad membrane or the radio receiver has failed.
How to identify what you have: open the housing and look for the model sticker on the circuit board, not the front plate. The front plate often carries a generic brand mark, while the board has the actual series and revision. Measure the keypad face while you’re at it. Linear keypads come in three common sizes: the narrow flush-mount, the 4″ surface-mount, and the 6″ pedestal units for driveway entry. If you call us with that model number and the measurement, we can usually tell you over the phone whether we’re bringing the right part, which saves everyone a trip.
As far as OEM versus aftermarket: for Linear keypads and readers, we prefer the OEM part where it’s still available. The aftermarket membranes and rubber covers for older AEP panels work fine for a couple of years in West Hollywood, but UV kills them faster than anything else. If your keypad faces southwest sun, expect the rubber to crack and the keys to fade within two seasons regardless of what you buy. We’ll tell you that before you spend the money.
Signs Your Linear Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad lights up but the gate doesn’t move. This usually points to the relay output board, not the keypad itself. The keypad sends its signal to a relay, and that relay is often the first component to fail from repeated cycling. We test the relay before we replace the keypad, which is not how a parts-swapper would approach it.
- Codes work sometimes and not others. Intermittent operation on a Linear system is almost always wiring or a cold solder joint on the receiver. West Hollywood’s temperature swings between the canyons and the flats loosen connection points over time. Tightening and re-seating fixes a surprising number of these.
- Remote range dropped by half or more. On Linear systems with a radio receiver, the antenna or the receiver board itself wears down. If you have to be within ten feet for the remote to work, the receiver is likely on its way out. Antennas also corrode in coastal-adjacent air, which absolutely reaches West Hollywood on overcast mornings.
- Call box buzzes or crackles when you press buttons. That’s usually the speaker unit or the membrane underneath the buttons. On older Linear telephone entry panels, the membrane is the single most-failed part we see. The board underneath is often fine.
- Keypad codes worked yesterday and now the panel is dead. Check the breaker first. If the panel has power and still reads dead, the voltage regulator on the control board likely failed. That’s a board replacement, and it’s worth having us confirm before you buy anything.

Access control components run on low voltage, usually 12 to 24 volts DC. That means the risk of shock is minimal compared to working on the operator’s high-voltage side. But low voltage doesn’t mean no stakes. Wrong wiring can fry a new $150 board in seconds, and the small-gauge wire inside a Linear pedestal housing is unforgiving if you nick it. If you’re comfortable with a multimeter and you can read a wiring diagram, replacing a keypad or receiver is a manageable afternoon. Check for corrosion first, label every wire before you disconnect anything, and take a photo of the original wiring. A photo has saved several West Hollywood customers from a weekend of guessing.
