Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To

Mighty Mule doesn’t make one universal hinge. The MM360, MM371, MM372, and MM562 single-gate kits use a barrel-style hinge with a fixed pin, while the MM571, MM572, and FM500 dual-gate and heavy-duty lines use a heavier hinge with a greasable fitting and a larger pin diameter. The rollers vary too: light-duty kits ship with a 4-inch nylon roller, but the heavier series need a 6-inch or steel-core roller to hold up under a full-length gate.

Here’s the gotcha we see in West Hollywood all the time: an owner buys a replacement hinge online that looks identical in the photo, but the bolt spacing is off by a quarter inch and the gate never hangs right again. • The gate scrapes the ground at the end of its travel. The roller has worn flat on one side or seized up entirely, so the gate is now riding on its edge instead of rolling. Every cycle shaves a little more metal off the gate frame.

Here’s the honest split. You can safely check the roller yourself: get down at eye level with the roller while someone slowly opens the gate and watch whether it spins or skids. If it skids, it’s done. You can also lift the gate at the latch end and feel for play in the hinge pin. If it clunks, that hinge is done.

Replacing the parts is another matter. A Mighty Mule hinge carries the full weight of the gate, and when you unbolt that hinge, whatever was holding the gate up is now gone. A gate that weighs 300 or 400 pounds can kick out sideways and pin you against the post or the ground faster than you can step back.
