DoorKing Gate Motor Replacement: The West Hollywood Owner’s Guide

If your DoorKing gate motor has failed or is failing, we stock DoorKing-compatible replacement motors and typically install them for $950-$1,850 depending on your model, swing vs. slide, and whether we’re reusing your existing board or replacing it too. Most DoorKing motor swaps in West Hollywood are done same-day or next-day because we keep common motors on the truck. Owners usually discover the motor has failed when the gate stops mid-travel, buzzes without moving, or trips its breaker every time it tries to open. Sometimes it’s not the motor at all – it’s the capacitor, the limit switch assembly, or a control board sending bad signals – which is why we diagnose before we quote a motor.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

DoorKing has been building gate operators since 1948, and in West Hollywood we see three main lines still in service: the 6300/6400 series (swing gates), the 9000 series (slide gates), and the older 1500/1600 series that’s been discontinued but still running on properties up in the hills. The 6300 uses a 1/2 HP motor with a gearbox built into the operator arm, while the 9000 slide operators pull more torque and need a motor matched to the gate’s weight and travel distance. The compatibility gotcha most owners miss: a DoorKing motor labelled for a 6300 won’t bolt into a 6400 without an adapter plate, and the 1500-series motors are no longer manufactured, so we either rebuild what you have or retrofit a current motor with a new mount.

OEM vs. aftermarket: For DoorKing specifically, we recommend OEM or a known-equivalent aftermarket motor with the same shaft diameter and RPM rating. Cheap aftermarket motors with mismatched shaft specs strip out the gearbox in under a year. We prefer OEM because DoorKing’s tolerances are consistent, but a quality aftermarket motor from a supplier we’ve vetted saves $200-$350 and holds up fine when the gearbox is fresh and the gate is balanced.

We’re an independent service provider – not affiliated with DoorKing – but we’ve installed and repaired their equipment across Los Angeles for over two decades.

Signs Your DoorKing Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

  • Gate buzzes or hums but doesn’t move. That’s the motor drawing current but the capacitor failing first. The capacitor gives the motor its starting jolt, and when it goes, the motor just sits there vibrating. We replace the capacitor first – it’s a $40 part – because a lot of owners get quoted a full motor when the motor is fine.
  • Gate opens slow or struggles uphill. West Hollywood has plenty of sloped driveways, and a motor that’s losing torque is working twice as hard. Sometimes it’s low voltage from a aging run of wire, sometimes it’s the motor itself losing winding integrity. We test voltage drop before blaming the motor.
  • Motor trips the breaker repeatedly. A motor drawing too many amps is either bound up at the gearbox or shorted internally. If resetting the breaker works once and then it trips again, the windings are degrading. That’s a replacement, not a repair.
  • Burn smell or visible scorching at the operator housing. This is the one where you stop using the gate and call us. Overheated windings or a seized gearbox will cook themselves further every cycle. Don’t keep operating it. We’ve seen what a scorched motor does to a control board when it finally shorts – it’s not worth the gamble.
  • Gate opens but won’t close, or closes but won’t open. The motor runs one direction fine and then stalls the other. That’s usually a limit switch problem, not a motor failure, but on older DoorKing units the limit switches live inside the motor housing, which means the repair route goes through a motor disassembly anyway. We’ll tell you which it is after we look.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we quote in West Hollywood, installed:

  • Swing gate motor (6300/6400 series): $950-$1,450 installed, including new capacitor, limit switch check, and gearbox lubrication.
  • Slide gate motor (9000 series): $1,250-$1,850 installed, including chain or rack alignment check and torque adjustment.
  • Legacy motor retrofit (1500/1600 series): $1,600-$2,200 installed, including new mount fabrication and wiring harness update.

What drives the range: whether the gate is swing or slide, how far the operator sits from the power source, and whether we’re swapping just the motor or the motor plus the board that got damaged in the failure. The price is agreed and written down before any work starts – no surprises at the door. Every motor replacement carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if it’s not cycling clean, one call brings us back, no runaround.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself before calling: confirm the breaker isn’t tripped, make sure the gate itself isn’t physically jammed on a rock or a branch, and check that the power switch at the operator hasn’t been flipped off. What you shouldn’t do is open the operator housing and start swapping a motor yourself. There’s 120V or 240V live inside these units, the capacitor holds a charge even when unplugged, and a swing gate under tension can move suddenly when you loosen the motor mount. We’ve had to un-do more than one DIY attempt in the hills above Sunset where a well-meaning owner got the capacitor wired backward and fried a $400 board. If the gate is moving at all when it shouldn’t be, stop using it and call (323) 677-4063. Hal has been fixing gates in and around West Hollywood since 2001, and most of our regulars know us from those hillside driveways near Laurel Canyon where a busted motor can lock you out before your morning coffee.
