BFT Welding & Fabrication: The West Hollywood Owner’s Guide
When a BFT gate hinge tears loose or a post bracket snaps, the fix usually comes down to welding and fabrication work done right the first time. We stock BFT-compatible weld plates, hinge assemblies, and post brackets on the truck, and most West Hollywood repairs run between $180 and $450 installed depending on the post condition and how much fabrication is needed. You’ll know this is your problem when the gate drags on one corner, the hinge post shows a crack running through the weld, or the gate has started leaning like it’s tired.
What usually happens is the original weld was never fully penetrated, or the post itself has rusted from the inside out where the sprinklers have been hitting it every morning for a decade. In West Hollywood, where driveways climb and gates twist against gravity all day, a marginal weld fails faster than anywhere flat. Hal Gatewood has been fixing these exact failures since 2001, and we’d rather reweld your gate in place than sell you parts you don’t need.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT has used a few different hinge and bracket configurations over the years, and the part you need depends on which series you have. The older BFT Deimos and Phobos swing gate models use a welded steel hinge assembly with a cast post plate, while the newer BFT Kustos and Sub series moved to a bolt-on design that still relies on a fabricated tab welded to the post. Slide gates from BFT, including the BFT Rigel and T-Box lines, use a rolling support carriage but still depend on welded receiver plates and guide brackets that take a beating every cycle.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha: BFT changed the bolt pattern between the BT series and the A-series hinges in the mid-2010s, so a hinge from a 12-year-old Deimos won’t line up on a 4-year-old motor swap without a welded adapter plate. We fabricate those adapters when needed rather than drilling new holes in your post, because drilling a post full of extra holes is how you invite rust into the load path. On the parts themselves, OEM BFT hinge assemblies run a premium, but for the welded brackets and plates we typically use domestically fabricated steel that matches or exceeds the original gauge, then coat it the same way BFT does so it doesn’t look like a patch job. If you’re unsure which series you have, the model tag on the motor housing and the measurement between hinge bolt centers will tell us everything we need before we ever touch the gate.
Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags at the latch corner even after you tighten everything. The hinge post has likely shifted or the weld connecting the hinge ear to the post is stretching. When steel stretches at a weld, it moves a little more each week until something tears.
- You can see daylight or rust staining around a hinge weld. Rust bleeding from a weld line means moisture got inside the joint. What you’re seeing is active corrosion eating the connection from the inside out, common on West Hollywood hillside properties where irrigation overspray hits the post.
- The gate shudders or whips when the BFT motor starts and stops. A cracked bracket or loose post weld turns every motor start into a jackhammer on the connection. The motor may be operating normally, but the structure it’s hanging from is flexing like a diving board.
- You hear a creak or snap from the post area during a full cycle. Creaking is metal micro-cracking at a stressed weld. A single loud snap usually means the weld finally let go completely, and the gate is now held on by the motor arm and hope.
- The BFT motor is overheating or erroring out on limit stops. When a gate drags because the structure has shifted, the motor compensates by pulling harder. That extra load shows up as burned contacts, tripped thermal protection, and a board that fails early.
None of these get better on their own. When the hinge post weld is compromised, every cycle makes it worse, and the day it fully separates is never the day you’d choose for it.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In West Hollywood, expect $180 to $450 for a typical BFT weld repair or bracket fabrication, with most jobs landing around $250 to $320. Here’s the breakdown of what that includes and what moves the price:
- Basic weld repair on an existing hinge or bracket: $180 to $240, including grinding the old weld, prepping the surface, and laying a full-penetration weld with anti-corrosion coating.
- Fabricated replacement plate or adapter (cut, shaped, drilled, welded, coated): $220 to $320, depending on steel gauge and whether we’re matching a BFT-specific bolt pattern.
- Full hinge replacement with new OEM or matched aftermarket assembly and weld-in post plate: $280 to $450, including removal of the old assembly and reinforcing the load path.
What drives the range is mostly post condition. If the post is corroded at the base or was never set deep enough, we’ll tell you before we weld anything, because welding to a bad post is just renting time. Every quote is written, not spoken over the phone, and the price you agree to is the price you pay, before the first spark. All welding and fabrication carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If something isn’t holding the way it should, we come back, no runaround.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely check the visual signs: look for rust at the welds, see if the gate has sagged relative to the latch, watch for flex at the post during opening. You can also spray a little penetrating oil on hinge pins that are squealing from surface friction. That’s where safe checking ends.
What you should not do is attempt to reweld a load-bearing gate hinge or post plate yourself. These connections carry the full weight of the gate plus the force of the BFT motor accelerating and decelerating it hundreds of times a day. A weld with poor penetration or the wrong rod on a gate that size can fail without warning, and a falling gate is heavier than anyone expects. The structure also has to be square before you strike an arc, and if it’s welded crooked, you’re paying twice to have it cut off and redone. Call us at (323) 677-4063, describe what the gate’s doing, and Hal will tell you straight whether it needs a reweld, a fabricated plate, or a whole new post. On most West Hollywood driveway gates, we handle the full repair and have it cycling clean before the sun crosses the ridge.
FAQs
On a properly prepped and coated weld in West Hollywood, expect 10 to 15 years from a hinge post weld and the life of the gate for a fabricated bracket. The reason most factory welds fail early is not bad welding, it’s bad prep or bare steel left uncoated at the weld line. We grind to bright metal, weld at full penetration, and coat the joint the same day. Without that prep, eight years is optimistic.
In most cases, yes. A cracked weld is reinforced and rewelded in place. A bent but intact bracket is heated, straightened, and gusseted. Replacement only makes sense when the part is cracked through the body, corroded past load-bearing thickness, or already rewelded once before. We repair what other companies swap out because a repaired original, done correctly, often outlasts a cheaper new part that doesn’t quite match the bolt pattern.
Most welding and fabrication jobs on BFT gates take two to four hours from arrival to a gate that cycles clean. If we’re fabricating a custom adapter plate for an older BFT series, add an hour and we’ll let you know before we start. We carry most common BFT hinge plates and steel stock on the truck, so it’s rare that we need to leave and come back for parts.
We stock steel plate, tube, flat bar, hinge assemblies, and the BFT-specific bolt patterns needed for Deimos, Phobos, Kustos, Sub, Rigel, and T-Box models. We’re an independent shop, not affiliated with BFT, but we service nine major gate brands including BFT, LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls, so the parts on the truck are selected for what actually fails in West Hollywood. If the part isn’t on the truck, we get it the same day. Call (323) 677-4063 with your model number and a photo of the failed part, and we’ll have the price ready before we get there.
