AfterBFT Keypad & Intercom Repair: The West Hollywood Owner’s Guide

Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT has made several keypad and intercom lines over the years, and they are not interchangeable. The older MITTO and BIRIO series keypads use a 2-wire bus and are common on gates installed in West Hollywood’s hillside neighborhoods in the early 2000s. The newer PERSEO and CLONIX lines use different voltage and wiring. The intercom modules follow the same split: the older OBERON and BEBA series versus current-production boards.
The compatibility gotcha that trips people up: a BFT keypad may look identical to the one you have but be wired for a different board revision. BFT changed connector pinouts on some control boards around 2012, and a keypad that fits the old board will not talk to the new one. Before we sell you a part, we check the label on the keypad’s back plate and the board revision inside the opener. It takes two minutes and it saves you from buying a part that will never work.
Our honest take on OEM versus aftermarket for BFT parts: BFT OEM keypads are built for European weather, which means they handle rain fine but the plastics and rubber membranes age faster in Southern California’s UV. We stock quality aftermarket BFT-compatible keypads for most common series because they cost 30 to 50 percent less and the membrane material is actually more UV-stable. For intercom boards, we lean OEM because the audio circuitry is more particular. Either way, we only install parts we will stand behind for the length of the 90-Day Done Right Promise.
Signs Your BFT Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- Keypad lights up but the gate won’t open. The keypad is sending a signal, but the control board inside isn’t receiving it. Most common cause: a corroded wire connection at the terminal block or a fried relay on the board, not the keypad itself.
- Keypad is completely dead. Either the power lead has come loose at the opener, or the keypad membrane has failed. If it’s older than about 7 years and has been in direct sun, we usually replace the whole keypad rather than repair the membrane.
- Intercom buzzes or crackles when a guest calls. The speaker cone has degraded or a wire connection has loosened. Intercom crackle is almost never the board, which is good news because speakers are cheaper to fix.
- You can hear the guest, but they can’t hear you. The microphone element is shot. On older OBERON intercoms, the microphone is not serviceable as a separate part, so the whole module gets swapped.
- Gate opens randomly or won’t accept some codes. Moisture has gotten inside the keypad and is shorting across the buttons, or the membrane is going and registering ghost presses. This one is a security problem as much as an annoyance, and it’s worth fixing before the keypad locks you out entirely.

DIY or Call Us?
There are a few things you can safely check yourself: whether the keypad has power at all, whether the breaker for the gate opener tripped, and whether the wires at the back of the keypad look visibly loose or green with corrosion. If you see a loose wire and you’re comfortable with low-voltage wiring, you can tighten it. That’s the limit of what I’d suggest.
Beyond that, BFT keypads and intercoms get into board-level electronics and low-voltage circuits that are easy to damage and annoying to diagnose without the right test equipment.
